Long Time Comin'
Review By: Codi Appropriately titled, Julia Kelly's "Long Time Comin" is of course referring to the title track of the CD. I say appropriately titled because after experiencing the amazing talent exhibited on this CD, I certainly feel I wish I had been exposed to her music much earlier! The power of Kelly's rich and full alto voice is astounding. Combine that |
with Julia's tender guitar accompaniment, you have beautiful art. Not just sung and played but weaved into a personal voyage of musical serenity. Yes, I obviously very much enjoyed and enjoy "Long Time Comin".
It seems reviewers, this one included have a tendency to associate artists with other artists. A natural thing to do, makes for common understanding. I would find it extremely difficult to limit the influences I interpreted in Julia's music. Based in folk I would say her lyrics, style, and vocal abilities surely create a wide crossover effect for her music. That would include various genres as well as gender. Listening to "Long Time Comin" brought me to memories of Jacques Brel in some of Kelly's handling of topics, musical tempo and style.
Eleven tracks complete the "Long Time Comin" CD. Still, Julia Kelly knows how to leave her fans wanting more. As I continually hate to know the CD has ended. Fortunately modern technology has granted us wonderful availabilities like repeat. ;-) Julia takes us on a musical journey with views of love, hope, humor, beauty and understanding. She does this with honest sensitive lyrics. To the point, and with a strong sense of self-understanding, Kelly's lyrics touch a myriad of emotions. A reaction is a definite. This is not a CD I feel most will forget just in its ability to reach into a corner of your mind and tug an unexpected connection. That she does this with such a warm and sincere talent makes for one of those "musical connection" moments we all have.
All songs on this CD deserve standout credit, so its hard to pick a few and go... but lets give it a shot. The title track and number one, "Long Time Comin" is a warm welcome to her music. Clear exquisite vocals deliver a message of understanding. "Smiling Mornings" is a lively treatment of reflection. "I Ain't Missed You Yet" a look at Julia's humor is at points, sing-a-long contagious and oh such a familiar topic. "Little One", probably my favorite is a beautiful ballad of strength and hope. "I Am A Lesbian Now" is comic, lively, and sure to be of anthem status. Complete with the perfect opportunity for loads of fun audience participation. Again, these are just a few. The entire CD is worth more than a casual listen.
In the next issue I will happily be offering a review of Julia Kelly's new CD, "Against The Ticking". A wonderful follow-up to "Long Time Comin". With her ability in song writing and performance all I will say in this issue is Bravo!
