River City Boyz Review
Review By Doug Stevens

The River City Boyz

I remember the first time I saw the River City Boyz. It was at Hoedown in San Francisco, the annual October benefit held by Sundance Saloon at the San Francisco Design Center. I remember looking at 3 attractive guys in cowboy hats coming onto the stage.

The music started and I was amazed. Bud Dolan, a tall cowboy from Sacramento, is the lead singer/manager of the group. He stood in the center and sang with a strong and beautiful 2nd tenor voice. His vocal technique is flawless, and he is very comfortable with the country style. You can tell he comes to it naturally.

They were dressed like cowboys and looked the part in everyway. What was amazing was their sound. The blend of the 3 voices was incredible. The close harmonies were creamy and so beautiful that the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. The skill with which they sang those songs and interacted with each other on stage was absolutely professional. With this kind of talent, these guys are going to go very far. I have not heard a Nashville produced recording with sound this good. And, this was a live performance!

The ‘River City’ in question is Sacramento, CA. These Central Valley California towns have a long tradition of western ‘cowboy’ life culturally and musically. The River City Boyz does this tradition proud! Right now the group consists of Bud Dolan, the lead singer, Kelly Brown (baritone) and Sue Kasper (song writer who helps out with vocals for local performances). They perform popular, well known country hits as well as songs written especially for them. At another performance I heard them sing a 3-part arrangement of Hal Ketchum’s ‘Small Town Saturday Night.’ It’s too bad that you can’t hear this arrangement on the radio right now. It would be a hit!

I have heard The River City Boyz performing at many rodeos on the IGRA circuit. And, they are planning to release their first album within the next year. Be on the lookout for this group! You can find out more about what The River City Boyz are up to by going to their website at www.RiverCityBoyz.com.
