GOTHOS
Performance Review By: Terry Christopher Masters
in Disguise: The Sound of
GOTHOS In a youth driven music industry, much is
overlooked where seasoned pro’s who have successfully endured the ever
changing landscape that is the indie music scene in NYC are concerned.
One such band that has morphed, changed, evolved, but also grown
is the new Goth Rock band, GOTHOS.
GOTHOS consists of frontman, Gordon Smith, smokin’ hot
guitarist, Joe Base, and the rhythm-pounding, bad-ass drummer, Anthony
Maulella. Each member of this newly formed musical entity comes with a
musical lineage that is well schooled, well experienced as they are
talented. |
GOTHOS is in essence a cover band that re-examines Goth rock, post-punk, synth pop legendary songs such as the 9 gems they shared with their more than receptive audience last Thursday, October 1 at the performance venue, Alphabet Lounge and smothers them with a fresh vibe that honors the original with a renewed breath of life while also introducing grittier, dirtier, darker arrangements that are quite intoxicating, riveting and absolutely entertaining. In the right hands of an equally well schooled, experienced touring management team, GOTHOS would take the Goth Rock world on fire by storm.
Gordon Smith delivers great vocals with a Gary Numan meets Robert Smith of The Cure type of delivery. Joe Base made the guitar scream and wail through many of the numbers while also bringing in a dark, weighted guitar chop that at times brought to mind Manson’s sound in The Beautiful People. Anthony Maulella is one of the most enigmatic drummers on the NYC music scene who not only keeps the band nailed together with his precise and consistent meter, but also shows the a set of drum pads absolutely no mercy while being a involved and engaged in the drum work rhythmically speaking, and also physically as he cuts and slices the air with a precision that would make the world’s top surgeons jealous.
The set list was:
The
Smiths: How Soon is Now
Bauhaus: Bela Lugosi's Dead
Ministry: Everyday is Halloween
Joy Division: Love Will
Tear Us Apart
Soft Cell: Sex Dwarf
Nine Inch Nails: Closer
Siouxsie & the Banshees: Cities
in Dust
The Cult: She Sells Sanctuary
Sisters of Mercy: This
Corrosion
