"Screening Party" Dennis Hensley Portfolio By Greg Henry Alyson Books Review by: Len The premise is unique to say the least. What else would you expect from Dennis Hensley? "Screening Party" follows a group of "mouthy" friends and strangers as they ritualistically gather. The purpose of this propelling get together? To view some classic and some not-so-classic movies. Of course while critiquing, hacking, laughing, and even barfing their way through the films, and life. However, Hensley does not let us off frivolously, we are here for the ride. "Fasten your seat belts..." Dennis Hensley's believable and familiar character development instantly make the reader very comfortable. You either know someone like, or personally |
relate to his cast. Colorful and compelling these video voyeurs quickly creep into your own daily thoughts. I found myself switching to movies on the tube which were "hit upon" in "Screening Party" Obviously much more fun in a group, but the stark visualizations in the book do impact on the films. More often than not in a comedic way.
Of interest as well is the seemingly accidental study of group activity and dynamics. Throughout "Screening Party" you see the group grow, react, recoil, feel, and just about every other possibility. The "bonding" of characters is surprising and adds depth to the overall storyline. Not to suggest that this takes away from the overall enjoyment. A fun, laugh aloud, easy read. True Hensley style. And that's a good thing.
