In Concert: Tret Fure

In Concert: Tret Fure

Let's take a Tret Fure trivia quiz.  a) Tret Fure is the vice president of what Union ?  b) When did Tret Fure release her first CD? c) What is the name of the record label that Tret Fure owns?  If you know anything about womyn's music, then you certainly must have heard of Tret Fure.  She is considered an icon in the field.  If you don't want to take my word for it she can show you the Phyllis Schliessman Award for Outstanding Contributions to Women’s Music that she won.

I had the distinct pleasure to finally meet and hear Tret Fure when she appeared at the Night Eagle Café, on May 6, 2005.  She had driven to Oxford , NY from Madison , WI , with her partner, Jane Weldon, their beagle, Dulcie, and her guitar.  She was starting the obligatory concert tour (100 cities) to promote her new CD, entitled "Anytime Anywhere."  She told us that "it's hard to start a tour with a cold," but she performed admirably most of the evening.  All of the vocalizing was wearing on her voice on the last few songs, but overall this was a great concert.  She sang a few tunes from previous albums, but the focus was definitely the new one.  She started with "Eyes of God," and "Trouble," both upbeat, fun songs.  She explained that she always writes compositions about her family.  After a story about connecting with her mom, she sang "Grace."  Tret

encouraged us, "if we all did one random act of kindness each day, it may have a snowball effect."  Several numbers later she took a short break. She started her next set with the new song "Spread It Around," which she turned into a sing-a-long.  She told us that we should all sing, because it's a massage from the inside!  She became a bit retrospective during this set, she talked about her former partner and their horses, which led to "Fly."  From her "My Shoes" CD she sang "The Wedding Song," which she wrote for her nephew's wedding.  She added "I took it back when she and Jane got married.  They may revoke those gay weddings, but they can't take away that day, and they can't take away that civil ceremony."  She ended the set with "Let The Goodness In."  The audience had liked what they heard by the sound of the applause.  They shouted a few requests but she ultimately ended with "Minute By Minute," a tune that wouldn't strain her voice too much.

She said to us "I am glad to see so many familiar faces and so many new faces.  With this CD, her eleventh, she said "you hope, as an artist, you hope you get better and this one feels like it."  The lyrics from the song "Anytime, Anywhere" say it all: "Cause it only gets better; And it only gets smarter."  You can find Tret on the web at www.tretfure.com
