She started out by saying "Let's get this party started." From that point on, the audience got the opportunity to feast on this up-and-coming singer/song writer. She's a powerhouse of a singer, with incredible emotion in her voice and her body movements accentuate her lyrics. After the first song I had to wonder if she had the energy to sing like that for a couple of hours. During this acoustic set, her voice led us through a number of her original songs. She played songs like "Upstate," "Haircut," and "Black Boots," from her first studio CD entitled "Black Boots." She also played a couple of brand new songs. Before one of these songs she said, "I feel kinda close to it." There were even a couple of cover songs thrown in. I was not previously familiar with Katie's original songs, so I tried to listen closely to the lyrics. Her lyrics are intense, emotional and filled with lesbian angst. But I was distracted from the lyrics by her voice. The song "Indoors" was a vocal standout—she hit the high notes and the low notes—it was a banquet for the ears. I can picture her singing many different styles of music (even show tunes) and being good at all of them.
Between her two sets, Katie introduced a very special guest, Elisa Norris. Elisa read four interesting poems, which were well received by the audience.
Katie is obviously into her music. She performs wonderfully. She sure didn't sound like a traditional folk singer to me. She plays modern folk; there was so much energy in the songs that it might be considered Pop, especially when delivered with THAT voice. She's still developing her "style," I think if she could improve her repartee with the audience, she'd have them eating out of her hands.
Prior to her last song of the evening, she turned to us and said, "This is it, we've made it." She performed the song and said "Thank you very much." No encore? Give her time! During the evening, Katie had asked for any requests, but there weren't any. She responded with "they say you're supposed to know your audience, but I don't know you." We don't know you very well either Katie, but I was impressed with what I saw/heard. You are welcome to come back to Syracuse any time.
