In Concert: Kate Clinton

So what happens on a Saturday night when you're an AARP-eligible, L Word loving, short hair wearing (although I bet there was a mullet there at one time), funny, P-town loving feminist, Ms. Adventure debuting, former JD English teacher, politically savvy writer, LeMoyne College graduate, designated Bush watcher, New York Time's crossword puzzle-loving, rambunctious, woman loving Girlyman? Come to Syracuse of course! That's exactly what Kate Clinton did, when she performed at a benefit sponsored by CNY Pride at the Hosmer Auditorium, in the Everson Museum, [Syracuse, NY] on April 2, 2005. This performance was underwritten by a grant from the Cultural Resources Center.

She entertained us for a full 90 minutes. She talked, ranted, cajoled, defined and offered plenty of insight. She is a lesbian for all seasons. Her observations were about different aspects of LGBT experiences, which both womyn and men could relate to—and they were pretty funny. Culled from many sources, her personal stories were non-cerebral, but her political observations were astute and clever. She switched from topic-to-topic as fast as an adult with A.D.D. with a channel selector. For the PSA portion of her show, she reminded us of daylight saving time and after that it was a nonstop stream of

consciousness. She talked about performance enhancing drugs (like Viagara, Levitra and Cialas), Slim Fast commercials, single gay people, the Westminster Kennel Show, reality TV, gays in the military, the sing-a-long version of the Sound of Music, sanitary pads, Circuit Parties, bathrooms on cruise ships and becoming a minister online! She mentioned marriage almost as many times as Elizabeth Taylor has been to the alter. On the topic of gay marriage she repeated what some opponents have said "If gay people get married it will end civilization as we know it," to which she retorted "Good!" She pointed out that LGBT individuals are powerful people, "we've changed marriage, family, and the military." AMEN! Throughout the show she kept coming back to one of her favorite topics: politics. Her observations were clever and right on the money! I thought I'd die when she mentioned her nickname for Dick Cheney's wife: Lon!

She made the comment "So much of my humor comes from not hearing things right, and it's only going to get worse as I get older!" Well, I'm not worried about her age, I think that she will have plenty of fodder for thought, since George W. will be in office for the next four years. She's got a new book, "What the L?" coming out in June, and a new CD, "The Marrying Kind," is already available. You can find Kate on the internet at www.kateclinton.com . BTW. At the end of the show she was given a "Granite Tit Award" from the Island of Lesbos by an audience member. It was quite a funny moment!
