The Art Works of Gilles Balmet
Review By: Codi

Visual art sites are great fun at which to visit, linger, and ponder the artist's interpretation. Gilles Balmet's site is no exception. A panorama of style, color, movement, and medium. The site is divided into two sections; "Higher School of Art of Grenoble"  contains work done as a

student with instructor directed goals. It is extremely interesting and innovative to see how Gilles has reached his goals using mostly photography. However these are not just "pictures on a page", there is emotion and depth. As well Gilles has used various subject matter for instance photo of a photo narrowing in on a particular point in the original shot. The site is in French. So take along a translator or use the translation tool offered by BabelFish. The translation may be a little rough, but worth the time and effort. While Gilles' art work speaks without words, it does assist in understanding to have a basic grasp of where he was going with the project.

The second part of the site: "Own Productions" is much freer in scope and more challenging to the eye. The mediums range widely here from again photography, to pen and ink, as well as exercises in color and movement. A pleasure and extremely stimulating, this young man has vision and isn't afraid to explore. A well know art quote," I don't know much about art, but I now what I like." was actually used by an observer who traveled the site with me.

I like to have a second opinion when doing a visual art review. This helps with objectivity and, I have another reaction to the work. Of special interest to me were his various forms of self portraiture. Using color, lighting, angles, and depth to aid him in his perspective, Gilles soars here.

In the second section Gilles even gives us a new take on Webcam art. Yes I said webcam art and he is clothed, so not sexually explicit. However there definitely is sensual content. The movement, and mood in some shots are very sensual in their composition. Other topics covered are; Designs, Ego, Paris, Flo, love, and Rainbowstars. Especially interesting to me is Gilles view of Paris, and his unique study of "Flo". The art is as diverse as the topics. One of my favorites. "MICHEL-ANGE 2001" is an interpretive study based on a well known classic. Gilles even delves into his own variations using music as the medium. He leaves few stones unturned so to speak.

The site contains work from 1998-2001 in the first section during his time at the Higher School of Art of Grenoble" and his "Own Productions" span the years from 1995 to 2001. You are able to see his growth and even sometimes mood by taking a chronological view. Overall a very pleasant experience, Gilles has lots to offer the world and our community through the vast mediums and styles. Surely one of those sites where there is something for everyone!

I would love to see a live exhibit of Gilles Balmet's work. To add to the interest in several pieces he is a part of the subject. This is an art exhibit where your time is well spent and you are rewarded with a real introduction to the artist as well as his work. So relax, sit back and enjoy the visual and esoteric stimulation with Gilles Balmet.
