"Dropping
The God Bomb" Teddy Lee Brown Brown Bear Press Review by: Len Obviously an individualist and free thinker, Teddy Lee Brown has in "Dropping The God Bomb" crossed several controversial topics. Creationists versus Evolutionists is the main compelling theme to a deeper look into relationships, self image, and public and personal manipulation. His characters are well developed, and deep. Not all |
likeable, in fact the main characters are for me not very well liked as people. However they are true to human form and fault. All this controversy weaves together with suspense and surprising humor. Though the book is fiction, Brown has packed the storyline with enough facts to send even the mild researcher into fits of verification.
An intense read which will bring the reader back to re-examine, re-think, and take the deeper look. My major and pretty much only complaint is that the "God Bomb" is not "Dropped" in this first installment of Brown's trilogy. A frustrating ending leaves you wanting more. Isn't that what we were taught to do in all art classes? A true abrupt cliffhanger, I spent several minutes looking for the finale when DUH, I finally realized that was it. I also realized I was hooked. In that, Teddy Lee Brown is a consummate writer. Now I must know what happens. The sign of a gifted writer is bringing you back.
The characters are enticing in their ability to irritate, compel, and bring forth strong emotion. The Rev. Frye a televangelist with little heart and even less morals who is in direct confrontation with evolutionist professor Plummer. Not that Plummer is a hero in the normal view. Plummer is more of an immature self consumed ego maniac bent on personal self destruction who may take more than himself down. These two are pitted in the age old argument of how we got here, ape or Adam and Eve. The new theory introduced is for me a stretch, but this is fiction.
What in my opinion Brown does best is show the darker side of us all while adding a heavy dose of humor. When you relate to these characters it is literally scary. But relate you do in various ways. From the self serving excuse for bad behavior exhibited by Plummer caused by his overly religious and abusive father, to the demanding, greedy and treacherous Reverend Frye who wants to be the President more than save souls. Everything in between is there, even an unknown "spirit" persona brought to life by the mysterious "Bear". Plummer's wife and friend along with Frye's son are the protagonists, at least for me. Who battle the forces drawing both men to what seems to be a final confrontation. All revolving around a new "find", that being the actual bodies of Biblical Adam, Eve, and Abel.
To tell more I feel would ruin the experience. However, be prepared to become angry, curse the characters out loud as you read, and in the end of this installment be longing for the answers. All in all Brown succeeds in setting up the story, creating strong controversy and interest making for a great read. Well even better when we know some answers. Such as; who or what is bear, are the bodies real, and how is the compelling angst between Frye, Plummer and Plummer and his father and self resolved. I sit on pins for the installment, comfortably.
