SHOWTUNE A Memoir
By Jerry Herman with Marilyn Stasio Copyright Jerry Herman 1996 Donald I Fine Books Published by:Penguin Group Available at Amazon Books Review by: Mountman |
One of the lesser known biographies of a Gay man. One who has given us some of the best songs which have become classics. Jerry Herman. In case you dont know who that is, composed, Mame, Hello Dolly, and I Am What I Am, among many other shows and songs. You never know when or where you will find a jewel, as in my find with this book. So check everywhere when you shop, especially discount centers.
"Showtune" is a very candid account of Jerrys life and his love of the Musical Theater. And especially the Showtune. Jerry grew up in a loving family that owned a childrens camp in upstate New York. It was here that Jerry had his first chance to direct a musical. You get to know Jerry and some of the greats of all time... Carol Channing- the first Dolly, Angela Lansbury- Jerrys favorite Mame, Lucille Ball- Mame of the movies, and Barbra Streisand - the Dolly of the movies, just to name a few.
Showtune takes the reader through Jerrys life all the way up to his dealings with AIDS. All should make it a point to read this autobiography. As its scope covers many aspects of social groupings and lifestyles. Whether you read "Showtune" for the American Musical history or the history of a Gay Man., you wont be dissatisfied.
