Elaine Place and Roscoe CD cover Elaine Place and Roscoe

Scott Montgomery

Review By: Codi

Scott Montgomery has one of the most amazing voices I have heard. His range is tremendous, and with constant control and focus. His ability for different sounds would give a commercial synthesizer a hard time. Montgomery's music is equally diverse in style and very hard to peg into one category. As all is good, you spend more time listening and

enjoying. An upbeat jazzy feel "Elaine Place and Roscoe" take you to some very interesting places musically as well as lyrically. The combined talent of the accompanying musicians and Scott's amazing vocal skills provides for pure audio pleasure. In the true "jazz" tradition all are in touch with each other and all parts including voice become a part of the music itself, being instruments. Not that I would classify this as a jazz CD necessarily, there are some very heavy jazz influences here.

The dazzling performances are well produced and the execution is superb. No dull points included here. Changes in tempo, style, and rhythm give the entire CD balance, intrigue and interest. Surprises are in store, as with "Pretty Radio" a totally different twist, style reminiscent of the likes of  Frank Zappa, Leon Redbone, and some Lou Reed for added spice. That's some combination! It is very difficult to pick a few songs here for review. The twelve included on "Elaine Place and Roscoe" are all integral parts of the overall musical experience. Each song excellent on its own merit, but when enjoyed as a whole the feel is much stronger.

"Mess" is a great blend of instrumental sound and voice. Moments of "Mess" bring  'Heart-esq' harmonies and make for a real treat. "So Special" a lively glance at importance and self. Quite possibly my favorite, however "Pretty radio" is a high contender. "Amsterdam" has a hunting quality not usually found in what I would think of as upbeat. Another example of Montgomery's multi-faceted talents. Again, this is just a sampling of what treats are included on "Elaine Place and Roscoe".
