"The Living Dead" Scott Free Review by: Len Rogers Punk rock, in your face, angry, and talented all describe the music Scott Free has included on this CD. Those are the obvious, look a little deeper and you also see sensitivity, honesty, and human reaction. Add to this musical knowledge and strong vocal abilities make "The Living Dead" a unique and thought provoking listen. Not for the faint hearted or mild mannered, Free openly displays his feelings and thoughts on issues very much in the limelight of the GLBT community. He does this with pounding style and confidence. Scott's musical knowledge is well seen, not just another loud and obnoxious punk rock performer. |
I admit that I am not a close follower of the punk rock genre. However, Free's deliverance, choice of material, and his lyrics will make even the most skeptic listener take a closer look. Powerful and deep, the songs included here all have a message. From the first track, "Not Good Enough" Scott Free builds a strong showing, easing into his more genre driven style. Just when you have made the adjustment, Free adds, "Worthy". A jazzy alternative, exemplifying personal doubt and questioning.
Keeping your interest seems to be a special talent of this musician. He can deliver his anger, his rejection or hate there-of, his sensitivity, and bring it all together. The title track, "The Living Dead", an angry social reaction to the interferences which plague and harass our culture is an "out there" message to those who would see our community negated. Near the end of the CD Scott again changes tempo musically with "Leather Ghosts". A more trendy sound, complete with disco back sounds and wonderful imagery in the lyrics. This style change purveys through to the completion of "The Living Dead", making this not only an eye opening experience, but one which will alter to perceived image of Scott Free as only a punk rocker. This is a musician who uses all his skills to entertain, anger, and garner a strong reaction. A definite addition to any collection.
