Review by Robert Urban
StoneWall Society Artists On Art Series

For a while it seemed touch & go - but neither the looming war nor the blizzard of '03 could thwart one of the finest rock concerts I've ever been a part of.  Happily, the massive snowstorm raging outside the club actually brought in (& helped keep in) fans for the rockin' 4-hour multi-artist event.

SISTER FUNK

It's hard to imagine a rock group with more across-the-board appeal than headliners SISTER FUNK.  They make you dance & they make you sing.  It's also great to just sit back and enjoy their expert team playing & fine instrumental jammin'. Not only are they champs of the rock-club circuit, but with their arsenal of dance-hit cover tunes, awesome vocal harmonies, MTV-ready aura and solid, crowd-pleasing r&b pop instincts, they're also the perfect act  for outdoor music fests, weddings, proms - you name it.!  The Sistahs are also so damn good looking at what they do - no one in attendance - gay or straight - guy or gal -  can resist their sexy & powerful visual charm.

At the end of their super-charged, generous set, Sister Funk called out for requests - (I was tempted to yell "J. Geils"!). They closed with two classic funk anthems - Sister Sledge's WE ARE FAMILY and LaBelle's grand LADY MARMALADE -
both sung & played to perfection.  Star attraction SISTER FUNK (www.sisterfunk.com) is: Troy - vocals/ keys, Tina - vocals/sax, Vange - vocals/guitar, Wendy -vocals/bass and Blaze on drums.

I love playing at Meow Mix, and for my own set was honored to have the multi-talented men of KFM Band as back-up.  Together we offered up a combo of my own originals plus covers of Zeppelin, Stones, & Peter Gabriel; including a timely peace tribute - YES's "I've Seen All Good People/Your Move" medley.

Then The KFM Band (www.kfmband.com) treated the crowd to their own harmony laden folk-rock songs - these guys can sing exquisite 4-part harmony at the drop of a hat!  In them one can hear traces of CSNY, America, even The Association - but with a more relaxed, modern urban groove.

Folk star MEGHAN CARY (www.meghancary.com) made a special appearance at our show, masterfully singing lead on my "Meat-Eaters' Song".  Later during her set I got to sit in on guitar for some of her own songs, including her sumptuous & haunting title song "Onion Dream" from her current CD.

Marshall Zarne

Marshall Zarne

Opening act longhair singer/songwriter MARSHALL ZARNE (www.zarne.com) featured his own down-home brand of biker/trucker rock.  In his new back-up band Marshall has found kindred spirits in both musical style and appearance.
One could easily picture this quasi-country/western band playin' somewhere in the mythic Americana heartland - at some "Route 66 Roadhouse of the mind", and then ridin' off on their Harley's into the night.  Marshall makes an intriguing front man for his own gritty & at times painfully honest lyrics.

A special note of appreciation goes out to the women of MEOW MIX.  The sound system has never sounded better; thanks to "Killer" behind the mixing board.  She's a real pro.  Understaffed due to the blizzard, bartender Nancy & crew still managed to make both the bands and the unexpectedly large crowd feel right at home in their cozy club.

In town for the show were music radio show host Doug Peets of Washington, DC ("best 4 hours of my entire NYC weekend"!), Outmusic's Ed Mannix and some very exuberant fans from Omaha, NE who swore they came all the way to NYC for this very concert.

Meow Mix Men's Night NYC events (269 E. Houston St.)(3rd Sunday of every month) are hosted in tandem by gay rock artists Robert Urban & Yolanda.  For bookings & info contact either via www.roberturban.com or www.yolanda.net
