Mara Levi Wing Reviews |
CD Review "What Are You" Mara Levi Review by Len Rogers In her second solo CD, Mara Levi asks the socially prevalent question, "What Are You?" The answer of course with regard to Levi's CD is amazing! Yes a fan here, formed by Mara's first CD, "Life's A Ball". With this sophomore release Mara Levi breaks new, old, unfamiliar, and familiar ground with masterfully brilliant skill. Genre-spanning power vocals and deep layered lyrics combine to form a grand bouquet of eclectic musical talent that is pure Mara Levi. Wearing all hats pertaining to instrumentation and vocals this is a truly 100% Levi experience. An experience which brings to forefront the diverse interests and styles unique to this award winning artist. |
From the start of "What Are You" it is obvious you are in for something entirely different. For here Mara has taken a new direction from "Life's A Ball", in deliverance and choice. The CD title establishes a loose premise for the CD, one which aptly shows that required definition is not easily attained. Nor should it be required. For Levi is not defined or limited by a particular genre or style. "What Are You" brings a broad mix of both genre and talent. Mara musically and vocally soars with samplings of jazz, country, classically inspired, a little protest folk, pop, and that which can only be described as uniquely Mara Levi. Empowered with lyrics which entertain, hold and come back later to bring a strong memory with a thoughtful flash. The enjoyment of the initial listen is only enhanced by deeper lyrical understanding the second and third time around. My first listen was focused on the multi-level talents shown with Mara's powerful vocal delivery, musical accompaniment, and those lyrics! This CD does bring a renewed appreciation of my repeat button.
The brief beginning quirky "Intro" with vintage effects is a grabbing send off for the totally engaging music to follow. Following with "Drink It Down" Levi brings political commentary to a high level of musical entertainment. The catchy chorus and song's lively spirit linger like a relished memory on a warm summer eve. Track after track Mara keeps the standard high and musical journey exciting with her on target vocals and musical genre changes. The award winning "Homo Song" not only shows Levi's upfront sense of humor, but offers a strong stand on life and acceptance therein. "She Went To Pick Flowers" brings a carousel music box feel to which brings you to the more pop-lectic "Let Me". "Sweet On You" is a pure country take with some kickin' beat and smart lyrics. I was not able to pick a favorite, but if required it would be between "Drink It Down" and "Homo Song". Overall the most appropriate statement about "What Are You" may very well be Mara's own words, "Brother, this is the one!" Take it from me, it really is the one.
