Visual Arts Review
Josh Aterovis
Review by: Len
Josh Aterovis is a purist when it comes to his art. Aterovis, (his pen name, taken from the Latin for Black Sheep), uses no white paint in his art. All white areas are actually the color of the paper. An approach which offers challenge to an artist who also works in watercolors. Seascapes and water are also frequently subject matter for his art. All is accomplished with warmth, feeling, and integrity. Sharp contrasts in some pieces counter others which carry a misty feel. Throughout emotion and depth are strong components of Aterovis' talent.
To me it seems his works inter-relates. For instance, in "Sea Gazing" it seems that in the distance you could be viewing a distance shot of "More Than Friends". In "Sunset Beach" the theme could be carried on further with the image of footprints trailing off around a beachside sand dune. This particular groups of works really intrigued me. The colors are bright yet soft as well. Sharp coast lines bring detail to the gentle blending of the sky.
