“Skip
Macalester” by J. E. Robinson Harrington Park Press - Southern Tier Editions ISBN: 978-1-56023-576-7 2006 275 pages Review by Mountman/Joe I hate to start out with this, but this is the first book that I really didn’t like the main character. Skip is a spoiled, rich, self-absorbed 15-year-old kid, who happens to be coming of age and finding out things about himself, his friends, his family and his life. Skip’s best friend, Drew, is a ‘Whitmaner’, (someone from the lower-class subdivision of Whitman). When we first meet Drew, he takes Skip aside, “Now you’ve done it! It’s all over school!” And what was all over School? “They said that you touched your cousin… And not a good touch either; it was a bad touch.” Drew is surprised when Skip doesn’t deny it and says, “there’s nothing to do…” |
There is rape, desire, intrigue, and lots of surprises throughout the book. Not to worry though, the language that Mr. Robinson uses is so tame that it could be read to children if it were not for the subject matter.
