"ABBAlicious" CD
Review Various Artists Figjam Entertainment Review By: Len Rogers The premiere project for Figjam Entertainment, "ABBAlicious" is a standard setting quality work. If you find it difficult to wrap your lips around "ABBAlicious" then just say "Fun"!. The entire CD is packed with back to back "show stopping songs". Each delivered in the true and identifiable style of |
the performing artists. Nine of New York City's top drag
performers sing ABBA as you have never heard before. Some keeping in tradition
with standard ABBA style, but with personal flair and bite. Some taking a whole
different interpretation on a classic. All good, all unique in loyalty and
identification to the performers and Figjam Entertainment's goal of
providing
"fun and joy in the music that we know and love."
StoneWall Society is no stranger to the talents of Yolanda, the current two year reigning Transgendered Favorite in the Pride In The Arts Awards. Yolanda's single "Lay All Your Love On Me" is presented boldly as you would expect, with new arrangement, style, and rockin' guitar accompaniment delivered by Robert Urban. Soulful carriage and the "Yolanda" voice make this a sultry treat. Yolanda joins sassy comedienne Hedda Lettuce in a wild and fun filled country western romp as the "Chixie Dix" with "Dancing Queen". The introduction to "Dancing Queen" is classic comedy at best. Ms. Lettuce further titillates with her rendition of "Gimme Gimme Gimme" complete with "white girl rap" a la Hedda. Joie Starr brings classic southern charm to traditional ABBA with her pop-a-licious rendition of "S.O.S.". Sade Pendarvis' smooth velvet voice caresses the ear and pleases the listener on powerful takes of; "Knowing Me Knowing You" and "Voulez-vous."
"Waterloo" and "Chiquitta" are diverse pieces handled with matching quality and unique flair by the playful Edie. "Name Of The Game" is given a new and dynamic face with June Bug's Broadway torch-song treatment of this well remembered ABBA hit. Connie Cat's "Money Money Money" takes on a 60's rockin / Pop flavor with that distinct Connie Cat purrrrr-fection. Cashetta brings two distinct styles together with ease and attention getting flair on dance track, "Take A Chance On Me" and the piano backed "The Winner Takes It All". Betzy, (that's with a Z), brings Broadway styling and her own bawdy brand to "Super Trouper". ABBAlicious is closed appropriately with the ABBA standard "Mamma Mia" done in show stopping style, by the entire cast.
Excellent production credits go to Don "Donnie D." Dilego, who was praised by all cast members. This is no ordinary compilation and definitely not "Priscilla's" ABBA. Something for all, ABBA fan or not, this fun filled musical tapestry amuses and entertains. The CD Release party will be help June 22nd at Therapy 348 West 52nd Street New York NY 10019 with live performances by the cast! The release party is a benefit for amfAR AIDS Research and Immigration Equality. Tune to Rainbow World Radio on June 29th at 7pm central to meet the cast and hear the CD!
