“Wicked Angels”  by Eric Jourdan Translated by Thomas J. D. Armbrecht  Harrington Park Press - Southern Tier Editions ISBN: 978-1-56023-548-4 2006   124 pages reviewed by Mountman/Joe First off, “Wicked Angels” is an English translation of “Les mauvais anges”. It was written in 1955 and was banned for 30 years for ‘subversive’ subject matter. Actually, I didn’t find it subversive, it was pretty morose.

  It’s the story of Pierre and Gerard, cousins who share ‘the love that can’t be named’. I do have to say that the words Mr. Armbrecht used to translate this story kept my interest throughout the book. I kept turning the pages wondering the proverbial “What next?”.

I feel that “Wicked Angels” shows the views and attitudes of the 1950’s very well. It’s sort of a Gay Romeo and Juliet story. There’s plenty of tragedy in this one. I came away feeling that it was a senseless tragedy all the same. I don’t want to give away too much of the story. So, if you’re ready for a tear-jerker, this is the book for you.
