In Concert: Deidre McCalla
|
|
I bought
my first Deidre McCalla CD in
Rehoboth Beach
,
MD
and I immediately fell in love with her beautiful voice, plus her honest
and heart-felt lyrics. Since
she lives in
Atlanta
,
GA
, I figured that I'd have to wait a good long time in order to see her in
concert. So I was thrilled
when I was able to meet this OUT artist on August 13, 2005.
She performed some acoustic magic in "The Chapel in the
Pines," in North Eastham, MA (just a short distance from my vacation
destination of
Provincetown
).
It was a
very warm evening, the stage was softly lit and this singer/songwriter
stirred the still air with the mid-tempo "Playing For Keeps." This
is the title song from her latest CD. Her voice, which is as sweet as
honeysuckle, filled the stillness of the night, and captivated us with its
richness. She welcomed us into her performance and made us feel at home.
She performed songs from her four CD's and enriched us with tales
from her perspective. Deidre
is the single parent to a 12 year old boy, she said that "Being a
parent brings wonder back into your world," a sentiment reflected in
many of the songs that she sang. She made us chuckle when she told us that
according to the Singer/Songwriter Association, she was
|
required to play a heart wrenching breakup song every 15
minutes. Hey, she did the best that
she could! Later, she relayed a
story about taking part in a demonstration, in support of same-sex marriage, in
Virginia
. She had thought about writing a
song for the occasion, but she realized that Laurie Lewis had already written
THE song. "Love Chooses
You" had been a minor hit for Kathy Mattea, but its words fit perfectly for
the demonstration. After singing the
song for us, she said that now it's her "favorite song in the world."
She wonders what the original intent of the lyrics were, she'll have to
ask Laurie Lewis one day. I also
enjoyed the story about her son. At
age three he asked her not to sing to him at night.
She said, "I was kinda crushed.
I tried to explain that some people actually pay cash money to hear mommy
sing." Kids say the craziest
things!
I sang along
with most of the songs, but a few acoustic versions really stood out: "If
God Only Knew," "Girl You Don't Know" (one of my favorite songs
of all times), and "Walk Me Down To The River."
Deidre has made her living as a full-time professional musician for 28
years, which might explain why this show was so enjoyable.
Deidre
performed two 45 minute sets, plus an encore.
She thanked us, "I really appreciate you coming out and hanging with
me on a hot August night...I live in a place that usually feels like this.
We sent you our weather this year."
So did I enjoy the show? All
I can do is repeat the title of one of her songs "Girl You Don't
Know!" (the explanation point is mine). You
can find Deidre's cyber home on the Internet at www.deidremccalla.com.
In remembrance of the concert, I'm fixin' to sip on a Mint Julep, relax,
and listen to her CDs.
