Art gallery of Dawn Brayford Review by Len |
"I am a lesbian artist living and working in Liverpool, UK. I am primarily a painter and some of my works are displayed in the gallery of this site."
A simple introduction to a wide range of artistic talents. Through her art, Dawn touches both genders. This is art which will be appreciated and enjoyed by all. The mediums range from oil on canvas to mixed mediums including photography, sketches, including pen and ink. The work itself covers a much wider spectrum of universal relevance. Subject matter takes you from warm, fuzzy childhood memories to adult views of that same child as an out gay person. Some themes are female, some male, but all are equal in their ability to touch anyone, especially in the GLBT community. Dawn's watercolors are interesting displays of color, texture, and shape which exude several strong emotions. The internet presentation does not take away from the enjoyment of the work. I am sure there are stronger textures, more vibrant feel in seeing these works live. I wouldn't have missed this experience. Stimulating and interesting, plan a few visits and some time at each to get the full impact of Dawn's work.
I have a couple of examples below and a link to the gallery and site home page. A great part of enjoying and appreciating Dawn's work are her notes about the various pieces. These artist's words add depth, history and a personal touch which deepens the experience.

views on my behavior, the things I liked to do, the toys I liked to play with and such like, just because I came out when I was 20. I had not only become a different person NOW, but apparently their experiences of me as a child were somehow a charade, my whole history had changed, been revised in an instant. It is also about how gay people are treated as adults, as if we were never children ourselves, like we just arrived as fully adult people, disconnected from 'normal' people who had 'normal' childhoods. Our histories become coloured by the views of other people."
I highly recommend the time you will spend becoming familiar with this artist's work. My favorites "Fatboy" and "Jerry Loves Mickey" are just two which held a strong personal meaning for me. I am sure you will all find the same as I. Dawn's work is easy to relate to socially and personally.
As we venture into new areas of reviews, I want to take a moment to point out that our reviews are introductory by nature not critical. Our goal is to help spread the word about all GLBT Artists in all venues. We are very happy to have Dawn Brayford as our first artist in the Visual Arts - Painting section of our GLBT Arts Promotion. If you would like to be an "Arts Editor" for Equal Pride just Email us and we will follow-up right away. You will find this time well spent with tons of personal rewards.
