Yolanda & The
Plastic Family Wing
Live Review CBGB's "Downstairs Lounge" 11-21-02 By Michael Wilk |

Yolanda!
Alabama-born Yolanda, who looks like a walking
Valentine’s Day card as portrayed by Diana Dors and Divine in her
red-and-white fishtail gown, has a warm, seductively
husky voice. She also co-writes her material, along with Jess Jurkovic, who
plays great loungy, bluesy-style keyboards and does the band’s arrangements.
Dan Freeman plays a great bass guitar, and lively drumming by Dave Berger
and energetic hand percussion by Robin Burdulis make up the rest of this
gutsy-sounding band.
Yolanda opened the set with “Alien Love Child”, a clarion
call to every misunderstood small town cross-dresser- “My mind took me to a
place in outer space to search for people like me”, and followed with “Human
Nature”, “Primal Sensation”, a smoky rendition of Bobbie Gentry’s “Ode
to Billie Joe”, “Roll With it”, the hilarious “Trannie Chaser”,
“Intimacy”, “Angels”, and a rousing encore with “Freedom”, a song
about Brandon Teena.
The Downstairs Lounge is a great space, dark but not too
dark, spartanly furnished, and very cozy-I felt like I was in the 1960 British
J.D. film “Beat Girl”! There is a bar, of course, and comfortable, roomy
chairs and couches to sit on. If I’d known, I would have brought my bongo
drums!
So, keep your eyes and ears open for “Yolanda and the
Plastic Family”, because they’re a band with a great, chunky sound, and a
chanteuse that’s a whole lotta woman-and then some!
